Timnath town council to vote on $250,000 settlement to former Windsor mayor

The town council in Timnath will vote on a $250,000 settlement to the former mayor of Windsor stemming from his October 2017 arrest and subsequent acquittal.

The Coloradoan reports that John Vasquez was walking along the road in Timnath, midway between Fort Collins and Windsor, on the night in question. He had gotten into an argument with his wife at a restaurant and was walking the 11 miles to his home. He was also intoxicated.

After one Timnath officer stopped to check on him, a second officer, Forrest Andersen, arrived. What followed were two widely-diverging accounts of the interaction.

Andersen said that Vasquez was “yelling” and “hit me in the face” when Andersen attempted to arrest him.

Vasquez, who was mayor from 2008 to 2016, countered that Andersen slammed him into the car and dislocated his shoulders.

Timnath police did not have body cameras at the time of the encounter.

According to the Coloradoan, a judge dismissed the charge of resisting arrest against Vasquez, and a jury found him not guilty of assaulting a peace officer.

Andersen has since left the police force.

The size of this settlement truly speaks for itself,” Sarah Schielke, Vasquez’s lawyer, wrote in a statement. “None of this would have happened if Timnath Police had body cameras. Now they do.”
