Colorado’s diversity rises — slightly — according to census data

New Census Bureau data show that Colorado has become less white and more racially diverse since the last decennial census, but only slightly.

An analysis from Westword found that 67.9% of the state’s population was white in July 2018, compared to 70.2% in 2010. At the same time, the Latino, Asian, black, American Indian, multiracial and Hawaiian/Pacific Islander populations all experienced increases. The Latino demographic increased by the largest amount, now comprising 21.7% of Coloradans.

However, a 2017 survey reported by The Denver Channel found that Colorado’s large cities are still not as diverse as their peers. Denver ranked 17th among large cities along various measures of diversity, with New York City, Houston and Dallas among the top metropolises.

While Colorado perennially appears on lists of the best states for young people to move, the census data indicated that the state’s median age increased slightly, to 36.9 years from 36.1 years.

Regardless of the age distribution, there are 666,000 more people in Colorado today than eight and a half years ago. By comparison, the population of the entire state of Wyoming is 578,000 and declining.
