The Senate Republicans’ national campaign arm is welcoming U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, to Boulder this weekend with advertising linking the progressive rockstar to one of the Democrats running for Colorado’s U.S. Senate seat.

Andrew Romanoff, a former state House speaker, and Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, are “One and the Same,” a mobile billboard and geographically targeted Facebook video ads will proclaim, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee told Colorado Politics.

The ads point to Romanoff and AOC’s shared support for the Green New Deal, Medicare for all and stricter gun-control measures.

AOC & Romonoff: One and the same

Ocasio-Cortez is the featured speaker Saturday at the Boulder County Democratic Party’s annual fundraising dinner, which will be held at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Romanoff is one of nine Democrats running for the seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, considered one of the most vulnerable senators on the ballot next year. Since John Hickenlooper joined the primary last month, Romanoff has been portraying himself as a more progressive alternative to the centrist former two-term governor, who criticized some of the Democrats’ more aggressively progressive proposals during his brief run for president earlier this year.

“Colorado deserves an independent, bipartisan voice, not someone who is just going to be a vote for the radical far-left agenda ‘The Squad’ is trying to implement,” NRSC spokeswoman Joanna Rodriguez said.

Romanoff told Colorado Politics the ads didn’t bother him.

“The GOP must be worried about our campaign – and they should be,” he said in a written statement. “We have the broadest coalition and the best chance to beat Cory Gardner and pass a Green New Deal.”

It isn’t the first time the NRSC has attempted to link one of Colorado’s U.S. Senate candidates with Ocasio-Cortez. In early August, the NRSC put up a billboard in suburban Arapahoe County declaring that Stephany Rose Spaulding, a women’s and ethnic studies professor and former congressional candidate, is “too liberal for Colorado.”

The billboard pictured Spaulding alongside Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, two members of a group of young, progressive Democratic members of Congress known as “The Squad.”
