Crow amendment that calls for $5M to help schools after tragedies passes House
An amendment offered by freshman U.S. Rep. Jason Crow is aimed at putting $5 million into providing mental health resources to students in the wake of tragedies.
The amendment from the Aurora Democrat passed the U.S House Thursday by a 345-73 vote.
The proposal increases funding for Project SERV. The acronym stands for School Emergency Response to Violence.
The money is in an appropriations bill for the Department of Education and the Department of Labor, Health and Human Services.
Crow hails from a congressional district that has seen school shootings, as well as 2012’s Aurora theater massacre. He cited the STEM School shooting in Douglas County on May 7.
“By increasing funding we can increase our ability to address the mental health among our precious population, our children,” Crow said on the House floor Thursday.
Suspected assailants Devon Erickson, 18, and Alec McKinney, 16, were students at Highlands Ranch charter school.
The $5 million boost would effectively double the money the budget for Project SERV, a program within the U.S. Department of Education.
