Committed to universal health care, Polis launches listening tour

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jared Polis hit the road Tuesday to talk about health care on the Western Slope. His running mate, former state Rep. Dianne Primavera, is joining him.

During the Democratic Primary, Polis committed to universal health care. Though popular with Democrats, Amendment 69, called ColoradoCare, was drubbed on the ballot in 2016.

Colorado Politics was the first to report Monday that Primavera was Polis’ pick for his lieutenant governor. Primavera is the CEO of Susan G. Komen Colorado.

A press release from Polis’ campaign further described her as “a four-time cancer survivorand respected leader in the fight for affordable health care.”

They announced four stops, including two in Durango and lunch in Silverton, his campaign said.

The public stops are:

Grand Junction8 to 9:15 a.m.Mind Spring Health, 515 28 3/4 Road, Building A, Room A211

Delta10 to 11:30 a.m.Wild Flower Bistro, 305 Main St.

Durango3 to 3:30 p.m.281 Sawyer Drive. Suite 300

3:45 – 4:45 p.m.Durango Joe’s, 732 E. College Drive

“Coloradans couldn’t ask for a tougher Lieutenant Governor than Dianne Primavera, and I am thrilled she has agreed to be my running mate,” Polis said in a statement. “Dianne is a fighter who has proven she gets results. She’s fought cancer four separate times and survived. She’s fought for affordable health care for Colorado families when they needed it most. She’s fought for dignity and opportunity for disabled men and women. Coloradans deserve a lieutenant governor who will always put them first and who will stop at nothing to help our communities thrive. Dianne has proven again and again throughout her life that she is the fighter Colorado deserves.”

Primavera added, “I’m so humbled by this opportunity to serve alongside Jared Polis on behalf of the state we both love. Jared’s entire life has been about turning bold ideas into real results for Colorado families, whether as an entrepreneur creating jobs, as an education leader building schools, or as a representative fighting to expand affordable health care to millions – an issue that’s incredibly personal to me and to thousands of other Coloradans. This campaign is about putting Coloradans first, and I can’t wait to begin meeting with folks in every corner of our state about the challenges facing their families and how we can come together to solve them.”

The campaign for Republican nominee Walker Stapleton released an afternoon statement about Polis and health care:

“Coloradans on the Western Slope pay some of the highest premiums in the country under Obamacare that Congressman Polis has continually voted to keep in place,” said spokesman Jerrod Dobkin. “Now, Congressman Polis wants to double-down on government-run healthcare and force a Bernie Sanders-style system on Coloradans that will raise taxes and decrease choice.

“Congressman Polis chooses to ignore the fact that 80 percent of Colorado voters rejected this type of radical, single-payer healthcare system less than two years ago because it would have taken an additional $25 billion from taxpayers annually and driven jobs and businesses out of the state. Walker is committed to instituting reforms that will actually fix our healthcare system and bring about real relief to Coloradans that can’t afford the out-of-control costs of Obamacare.”
