Democrat Mike Johnston’s gubernatorial campaign released a Spanish-language ad – a first for a Colorado candidate for governor – ahead of a town hall he’s set to conduct in Spanish Wednesday night in Aurora.

“If you live in Colorado, and you’re building your life right here, then you are an American and this is your home,” Johnston, who speaks Spanish fluently, says in Spanish in the 30-second ad, which will air on digital platforms and in what the campaign described as a limited television buy.

Johnston, a former state senator and one of four Democrats running in the June 26 primary, plans to hold an immigration-rights workshop at the town hall, the second he’s conducted in Spanish. The event is scheduled at 7 p.m. at Hinkley High School in Aurora.

“I continue to hear from so many across Colorado who are fearful about what Washington’s immigration policy dysfunction means for them, their families, and their neighbors, so we’re going to talk openly about how to defend the rights of immigrants,” Johnston said in a statement.

Johnston on Sunday celebrated the fifth anniversary of the signing of the ASSET bill, legislation he co-sponsored that allows undocumented immigrants who graduate from Colorado high schools to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in the state.
