So much for easing into his new job slowly. Rookie Pueblo City Councilman Mark Aliff announced last week that he would like to take a leadership role in dealing with one of the community’s most challenging problems: What to do about the homeless.

At last week’s council meeting, several residents made it clear that they didn’t think the current solution – housing the homeless at a shelter in a former Salvation Army headquarters – was working. Residents who live near the shelter on West 13th Street complained about a variety of problems, ranging from used syringes littering their streets to the serenades of late night screaming.

The concerns of the neighborhood residents certainly are understandable. But the homeless have to go somewhere. And if not that shelter, then where?
