The Pueblo Chieftain: Keep class rankings for high schoolers

Imagine what it would be like if Pueblo City Schools (D60) decided to do away with all of its sports programs to protect the self-esteem of less athletically gifted students. The furor would be intense – and for good reason.

There’s nothing wrong with celebrating the accomplishments of kids who excel at sports. And the same principle should apply to academic pursuits, which are, after all, the main purpose kids have for attending school.

That’s why D60 officials should rethink their plans to do away with the traditional class ranking system that culminates with top students being selected as valedictorians and salutatorians of their graduating classes.
