Tom Tancredo getting help from GOP operative who helped knock off Eric Cantor

Chris Doss, the campaign operative who helped take down U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia in 2014, is putting his brand on Tom Tancredo, or maybe it’s the other way around.

Doss will be in Colorado next weekend talking to volunteers and helping Tancredo beef up his run for governor, according to an e-mail obtained by Colorado Politics, with the subject line “Calling All Tom Tancredo For Governor Supporters (Including Those Who Lean Strongly If Unsure As Of Yet).”

Doss was the campaign manager for an vastly under-funded candidate, college professor Dave Brat, when he toppled Cantor, a defining alt-right moment that opened the way for Trump to reach the White House.

The partnership shows further ties to former Trump political adviser Steve Bannon. Doss and Bannon both worked to get Brat elected. Bannon paid Tancredo a Colorado visit just before the former Colorado congressman and twice-defeated gubernatorial candidate jumped in the race last fall.

Doss is a member of the volunteer faculty of the conservative Leadership Institute in Arlington, Va.

“He drafted free-market laws enacted in Virginia and other states, and he’s worked in over a ‘gazillion’ campaigns since starting in middle school, including local, state, and federal races,” his bio there states. “He first wrote scripts for radio spots and phone banks in 10th grade. His political interests began when he accompanied his parents to the polls at age four (his age at the time, not his parents’). He hasn’t yet gotten it out of his system.

“As first Executive Director, Chris managed start-up operations for a policy think-tank. Earlier, he served three governors and worked in state legislatures and Congress. Including work as a lobbyist for advocacy organizations and private businesses, Chris has managed issues as diverse as transportation, the environment, education, economics, and property rights. He has been a national and international spokesperson – dealing with hostile reporters on a range of media outlets. (But ask why Larry King was nice to him!)”

Doss is scheduled to accompany Tancredo at a campaign volunteer training event next Saturday afternoon at the Rawlings Library in Pueblo.

“Tom will be present to visit with supporters and to introduce you to Mr. Chris Doss, his national Campaign Consultant,” the e-mail states. “Chris has traveled from his home in Virginia to specifically meet with Tom’s interested campaign volunteers.”

Another Tancredo training event is planned that morning at the Ruth Holley Library in Colorado Springs, followed by sessions that Sunday morning at the Pelican Lakes Point Club in Windsor and Sunday afternoon at the Waters Edge Winery in Centennial.
