With lone candidate dropping out, Colorado Green Party lacks a gubernatorial candidate

Veronique Bellamy of Longmont – the lone Green Party gubernatorial candidate – says she has withdrawn from the race for governor.

“I announced earlier this year that, on the advice of officials within my political party, that I would drop out of the race in order to allow the state party to build our base,” Bellamy tells Colorado Politics. “This is also why I didn’t request my party’s support for my candidacy at this year’s annual meeting. I am saddened by this decision but I feel like it is the correct course to take at this stage of our party’s life and I support the decision of our leadership.”

As to whether Bellamy will throw her support behind another candidate from another party, she said, “At this time, I’m not seeing anybody I like.”

And though she’s no longer seeking the governor’s seat, her political aspirations continue; she plans to run for the RTD Board of Directors, which governs Denver’s public transit, in 2020.

“There are serious problems with RTD, not just the poor service our northern communities have but also the poor decisions that plague the agency such as the usage of public private partnerships which is a major contributing factor to the delays with many areas of the FasTracks project,” she said. “I believe it’s important for the RTD Board of Directors to have someone who has enough knowledge of the system not to call basic bus service ‘limousine service’ as (District 1 Director) Judy Lubow did in our debate hosted by the Metro Mayors Caucus.”

Bellamy’s campaign committee – Frenemies of Veronique Bellamy for Governor – reported a zero amount in campaign contributions through April 2017; no finances were reported after that. Why “Frenemies”?

“I like giving my candidate finance committees quirky names,” Bellamy said. “My candidate finance committee in my RTD race last year was called ‘The Amazing Committee.'”
