A question of justice in Colorado Springs
A fatal automobile accident in conservative Colorado Springs involving an influential Republican raises unsettling questions about preferential treatment.
The question is whether Dan May, the Republican district attorney running the 4th Judicial District, was right to dismiss charges of suspicion of careless driving causing death and other infractions. A conviction could have meant jail time, probation and community service.
A 26-year-old man with no power or influence recently pleaded guilty in a similar but not identical accident and, while escaping jail time, he received plenty of the other available punishments. Journalists from The Gazette in Colorado Springs have rightly kept the story in the public eye.
