After Las Vegas shooting, a need for compassion and honest debate
Once again our nation grieves a mass murder. While much remained unclear into Monday afternoon, we know a man opened fire from a 32nd floor Las Vegas Strip hotel and sprayed a barrage of bullets at 22,000 concertgoers unable to flee. The gunman fired in repeated bursts, killing at least 59 and wounding more than 500.
We join those mourning the dead and the injured and in condemning the gunman’s cowardly act of evil.
We also urge caution and restraint. Once again the temptation is to engage in too-soon, too-vicious political debate over how to stop mass murders like this one. Let’s get the facts and avoid an unseemly back-and-forth that continues to stoke emotions that divide us.
