Equifax data breach is an opportunity for needed reform
Equifax has proven itself to be a bad actor, unworthy of its position of trust in America as a controller of sensitive personal identification information and personal credit data.
Failing to prevent a data security breach where hackers accessed the personal data of 143 million people is only the first on a growing list of reasons the company should no longer hold the trust of either consumers dependent on their credit scores or businesses choosing to use their data.
What, for example, are Americans to make of Thursday’s Wall Street Journal disclosure that hackers accessed Equifax’s website as early as May and began plotting their attack? Equifax has said it became aware of the hack on July 29 but didn’t notify the public until Sept. 7.
