The vote to repeal and replace Obamacare with, um, something put a very early spark in the campaign of Democrat Jason Crow, who hopes to unseat Rep. Mike Coffman next year.

The Cook Political Report, the venerable prognosticator of elections, moved the race to a “toss-up” status Friday. Trump’s proposal rates terribly in polls, and Republicans won’t do themselves any favors in next year’s mid-term elections.

Cook looked at 23 Republicans in districts Hillary Clinton won last year. Of those, 14 voted for the GOP plan Thursday. The Republican from Aurora was one of the nine who didn’t.

Cook reported Friday:

“Coffman ended up voting against the AHCA, but his hesitation to announce his position likely won’t assuage voters who want to send a message to President Trump next year. In his past three impressive victories, Coffman has been able to contrast his own military service against his opponents’ votes in the state legislature. But now Democrats are excited about attorney and former Army Ranger Jason Crow. Coffman hasn’t ruled out a bid for governor.”

Couple of problems there, Cookie. Mike’s wife, Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, is the one considering a run for governor. But it is accurate to say Mike hasn’t ruled it out.

Also, Cook fails to cite another Democrat who’s entered the race, Aurora attorney David Aarestad, and others considering getting in. It’s way too early to tell how Democrats will line up, until we’ve heard what state Sen. Rhonda Fields and others might do.

“Voters are going to have two very different choices next fall,” Crow said in a statement on Friday. “Do we want to continue with the way our country and political discourse are moving or do they want new leadership and a new voice representing them in Washington?”

Coffman campaign spokesman Tyler Sandberg was dismissive to “D.C. pundit analysis.”

“Washington, the city that sings to the song played by one hand clapping,” he joked.
