On Thursday, President Donald Trump finally gave some insight to the departure of Michael Flynn, who had served as Trump’s national security adviser until Monday, when he resigned.

The departure of Flynn, Trump reported, was not because of his discussions – before Trump’s inauguration – of the status of economic sanctions placed upon Russia and several Russian individuals by the Obama administration. Flynn’s resignation was sought because he apparently misled Vice President Mike Pence about those discussions.

That admission raises some discussion points, some of which center on the Logan Act, an 18th century law that was passed to prevent a Pennsylvania Quaker named George Logan from circumventing U.S. foreign relations with post-revolutionary France. There has never been a successful prosecution of the 218-year-old law.

The bigger question has to do with the current administration’s relationship with Russia.
