Editorial: Inauguration Day is for celebrating, not separating

Inauguration day is about the regular and peaceful transfer of power, which is one of the remarkable ways this nation has been blessed throughout its history, and as such it is a day worthy of celebrations, just like those magnificent fireworks that were let loose over the Lincoln Monument last night.

However, Democrats who are boycotting today’s events in Washington are instead putting the focus only on the incoming president, Donald Trump.

Yes, the 80 or so senators and representatives – and dignitaries such as outgoing Secretary of State John Kerry – have reasons for wanting to sit out today’s ceremonies and festivities, first among them concern that participation would be a sign of their approval of the new president. And there are other reasons: Trump did not win the popular vote, he was an unrelenting boor on the campaign trail, and he has been an ungracious winner. Even traditional conservatives and “establishment Republicans” fought his candidacy.
