Letter: Don’t hit consumers with oil tax hike

Editor:

The Obama administration recently released its $4.1 trillion budget plan, which called for $2.8 trillion in new taxes. Notable among those new taxes would be a $10-a-barrel oil tax. Americans are smart enough to realize they will ultimately bear this burden and, indeed, economists have already taken to the airwaves to say the plan will hike the cost of a gallon of gasoline by 22 cents, a tough hit for consumers’ wallets. However, they won’t just feel the pinch at the pump; many people forget that hundreds of products are made from oil — tires, cell phones — all of which could see higher prices as a result of an oil tax.

Despite recent job gains nationally, the middle class continues to struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families. The last thing they need is another tax increase from Washington.

It kept us grounded to the things that matter and focused on forward […]
