Letters: Dem candidates call out Windholz for rhetoric

Editor:

I was saddened by the events in Colorado Springs. The loss of life at the hands of a depraved and lost person is sickening. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims, the community of Colorado Springs and the Colorado Springs Police Department.

In the wake of such unimaginable horror, many of us are left wondering “why?” and seeking answers in our own way so we can begin the healing process. What we cannot do is blame the victims, as state Rep. Joann Windholz has in a recent statement. While across Colorado and around the country people were appalled and saddened for the victims and their families, Rep. Windholz said, “The true instigator of this violence and all violence at any [Planned Parenthood] facility, is [Planned Parenthood] themselves. Violence begets violence.”

There is simply no excuse for what happened at Planned Parenthood. Regardless of how people may feel on the issue of abortion or any political issue, for that matter, Americans roundly reject the notion that those who do not hold our beliefs deserve to be killed.

As a state representative, the words one uses truly matter. They are heard and felt. Rep. Windholz has shown that she does not represent the overwhelming majority of the people of House District 30.

I am deeply saddened by this senseless and shocking act of violence in Colorado Springs. This is a terrible moment not just here in Colorado, but throughout the nation. My heart goes out to the families of those who were injured and those who lost their lives.

I am extremely grateful for the first responders and staff of Planned Parenthood that kept so many others safe. Planned Parenthood provides quality, affordable care and is truly essential to meeting the needs of women and families in our state. I am pained that they have been targeted by this act of extremist brutality.

I am appalled by the statement made by Rep. JoAnn Windholz, blaming this heinous crime on Planned Parenthood itself and the healthcare providers there. Now is the time for grieving and healing, not politics. I will continue to stand with women and families of Colorado, Planned Parenthood and all providers who are committed to dignity and access to healthcare. Our communities need and deserve healthcare without threats or fear for their safety.
