Thanks to The Statesman for the very good coverage of the state conventions of both major political parties.

Those who have been elected as leaders are now entrusted with the system that will, for the 50th time since it was instituted in 1912, result in over 6,000 neighborhood meetings across Colorado in 2012.

As a result of the good media coverage and the big turn out at the 2008 and 2010 Colorado Caucuses, there is increased interest from newcomers to Colorado in our unique political system.

People who want to make a real difference should get involved now. Call your county chair person (use the phone book or Google the name of your party and your ZIP code) and ask for the names of your neighbors who are serving as your precinct committee people. Then go to their doors, so they know you are serious, and volunteer to help.

Each neighborhood has two precinct committee people for each major party. If there is a vacancy, tell the county chair you’d be glad to serve until the next election. Then you’ll have a vote on the county central committee.

People who are willing to help just a little each month between now and next spring can make a real difference. Our unique caucus-assembly system is the best chance for the common person to serve in elected public office, but requires a lot of effort. Many hands make light the work.
