Denver City Council public hearing, vote set on Axon ALPR camera contract

After a weeklong delay in committee, Council Resolution 26-0246, the proposed contract with Axon Enterprises for a new automatic license plate reading system, has made its way to the Denver City Council for consideration.

The City Council will host a special one-hour courtesy public hearing on the matter during the 5:30 p.m. session, accommodating as many speakers as time permits. Sign-up or submission of written testimony for this hearing closes at 3 p.m. Monday.

Among the bills to be introduced is Council Bill 25-0934, which would permit the City of Denver to enter into a financing arrangement for the Colorado Convention Center parking garage and the Denver Performing Arts Center parking garage.

This proposed transaction seeks to secure up to $108 million to fund fire alarm replacement through a lease/lease-purchase financing deal using Certificates of Participation (COPs). The money would be used to replace the existing fire alarm system at the Colorado Convention Center, reimburse the city for some preliminary expenditures and cover the associated cost of executing the deal.

There are three proclamations on the agenda.

The first, scheduled for reading in the 3:30 p.m. session, will recognize March 31, 2026, as “Sí Se Puede Day.” What used to be César Chávez Day is getting a new name after the controversy surrounding sexual assault allegations against the workers’ rights leader.

The second proclamation will commemorate Nowruz, the beginning of the traditional Persian (Iranian) New Year, now celebrated by many ethnic groups.

A final proclamation, slated for the 5:30 p.m. session, will honor Denver’s be well Health Initiative, a local grassroots organization that encourages underserved communities to manage their own health.

Denver City Council meetings continue to be held in the Parr-Widener Community Room as renovations in the council chambers progress.

Seating is limited, and the room will fill quickly.

The Denver City Council’s regular meeting begins at 3:30 p.m., with the general public comment session scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
