Democrat Jena Griswold endorsed by Jamie Raskin, James Coleman in Colorado’s attorney general primary

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold on Thursday released dozens of new endorsements for her candidacy in the 2026 Democratic primary for attorney general, including U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Senate President James Coleman and former state Reps. Leslie Herod and Karen Middleton.

In addition to current and former municipal officials, county commissioners and assorted community leaders, she’s also been recently endorsed by Aurora-based Plumbers Local No. 3 labor union, the Progressive Democrats of America and the group’s Colorado chapter, her campaign said.

Griswold, who faces term limits in her current position, is one of five Democrats running to take over from term-limited Attorney General Phil Weiser, a Democratic candidate for governor. Other Democrats in the attorney general race include Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty, former state House Speaker Crisanta Duran, attorney and nonprofit director David Seligman and former federal prosecutor Hetal Doshi. Republican Connor Pennington, a first-time candidate, has also filed to run for the office.

Griswold’s campaign said the slew of newly announced backers pushes her total number of endorsements past 180, including 26 state lawmakers, 16 current and former mayors and 20 current and former county commissioners.

Calling her “tough as nails,” Raskin, the lead Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, highlighted Griswold’s history of clashing with Republicans and the Trump administration over election procedures and voting rights in a statement released by her campaign.

“Throughout her impressive and productive career, Jena Griswold has defended strong democracy, survived one right-wing attack after another and fought like a tiger for the public interest,” Raskin said. “She has a zeal for justice and the rule of law and never backs down to bullies. She’s tough as nails and that’s what we need in these times of official lawlessness and cruelty. I’m honored to support her for Attorney General because I know she’ll be a relentlessly effective and creative lawyer for the people.”

Coleman, who joins House Majority Leader Monica Duran in Griswold’s corner, said in a statement that he was proud to endorse a friend in the primary.

“As secretary of state, Jena has protected our voting rights,” Coleman said. “She’s fought for working families and a brighter future for all Coloradans. As attorney general, Jena will continue that fight, protect our communities and stand up for justice and fairness across our state.”

Also among Griswold’s fresh crop of supporters are former U.S. Sen. Tim Wirth, former Senate President Leroy Garcia, former Colorado Democratic Party Chair Rick Palacio and former Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, a past chair of the Democratic Attorneys General Association.

Griswold said she was honored to land the endorsements.

“As attorney general, I’ll stand up to MAGA extremists, protect reproductive rights, take on illegal corporate greed and continue fighting to ensure every Coloradan — no matter their ZIP code — can live with dignity, opportunity, and justice.”

Colorado’s Democratic and Republican primary ballots are set to be finalized next spring ahead of the June 30 election.
