Greenland leadership looks to insulate itself from Trump overtures

Greenland‘s leadership is undertaking moves to insulate itself from President Donald Trump‘s overtures.

On Tuesday, Greenland’s Parliament passed a bill banning political donations “from foreign or anonymous contributors” to protect “Greenland’s political integrity.” The bill took effect immediately and was transparently about Trump’s recent efforts.

The bill “must be seen in light of the geopolitical interests in Greenland and the current situation where representatives of an allied great power have expressed interest in taking over and controlling Greenland,” the document says, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede called for a new snap election to secure a united front.

“It’s time for an election to the Inatsisartut [Greenlandic Parliament]. If the Inatsisartut approves my proposal, this will happen on March 11th,” Egede wrote Tuesday in a Facebook post, translated by Politico.

“We are in a serious time. A time we have never experienced in our country. The time is not for internal division but for cooperation and unity for our country. I am once again more than ready to work for you and to lead our country,” he added.

Egede previously voiced hope that he could set up a meeting with Trump, with Greenland Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt saying the meeting could be held days after the president’s inauguration.

“That’s what we’re working on,” Egede said when asked if he conveyed the message that Trump couldn’t take Greenland. “You can’t get around the fact that if they [the U.S.] want to talk about Greenland, they have to talk to Greenland.”

“The Greenlandic people must make it clear what they want to be. We do not want to be Danes. We do not want to be Americans,” he added.

Egede is a leader of the separatist socialist Inuit Ataqatigiit party, which advocates Greenland independence. Denmark has allowed the island to declare independence whenever it wants, though generous subsidies from Copenhagen have prevented the move.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that the United States must acquire Greenland for national security reasons. The island sits atop numerous critical natural resources, hosts a major U.S. military base, and occupies a major strategic location.

Trump’s efforts are the latest U.S. initiative to acquire the island from Denmark. Previous attempts were made in 1867, 1910, and 1946-1947.

Large-scale polling hasn’t yet been conducted on Greenlanders’ thoughts regarding an acquisition by the U.S., with two polls of small sample sizes finding polar opposite results.
