Trump reaches new popularity heights during third run for White House

Former President Donald Trump is running for president again, and in terms of favorability, the third consecutive time seems to be the charm.

A Gallup poll showed that 50% of adults rated Trump favorably, compared to 48% who rated him unfavorably. These figures are higher than in 2020, when 47% rated him favorably and 51% rated him unfavorably, and in 2016, when 36% rated him favorably and 61% rated him unfavorably.

Vice President Kamala Harris holds a net negative favorable rating in the survey, with 50% of adults rating her unfavorably and 48% rating her favorably. Her favorable rating is lower than President Joe Biden’s 2020 54%-43% net favorable rating but higher than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2016 52%-47% net unfavorable rating.

Both Trump and Harris’s 2024 ratings rank among the lowest in the Gallup poll dating back to 1956, although the survey was not conducted in 1988, 1996, and 2000. The only year in which both candidates’ favorable ratings were lower than Trump and Harris’s 2024 rating was Trump and Clinton’s in 2016.

The 2024 Gallup poll also showed that Trump had a higher favorable rating than his opponent, something he did not have in 2016 or 2020.

The former president has a higher percentage of adults rating him highly favorable, 31%, and highly unfavorable, 37%, than Harris, who had 30% rate her highly favorable and 34% rate her highly unfavorable.

Trump is polling better than Harris in favorability ratings and projections for who will win the most important states. In the RealClearPolitics polling average, Trump is leading Harris nationally, 49.3%-48.5% — marking the first time he has been projected to beat his opponent within two weeks of Election Day in any of his contests.

Trump is also leading in all of the battleground states in the RealClearPolitics polling average. In 2016 and 2020, he trailed his Democratic opponent in all but one state at this time in the campaign. Trump led Clinton in the RealClearPolitics polling average in Georgia at this time in 2016.

The Gallup poll comes two weeks before Election Day. Both the Trump and Harris campaigns are making stops in the battleground states in the race for the White House. Trump will campaign in North Carolina on Tuesday, while Harris is sitting down for an interview with NBC News.
