Ilhan Omar karaoke video goes viral ahead of primary

Ahead of Tuesday’s Democratic congressional primary, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) decided to “fight for her right” to party.

The incumbent “Squad” member, who faces her second challenge from former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, posted a video to her X account on Thursday singing the Beastie Boys’ classic song at a Minneapolis bar, with a campaign message attached.

“Fighting for the right to party,” Omar wrote in a post accompanying the video. “Fighting for the right to bodily autonomy. Fighting for the right to a livable planet. Fighting for the right to universal healthcare.”

If history plays a factor, the race between Omar and Samuels is expected to be close. In 2022, Samuels lost to the congresswoman by 2 percentage points.

However, this election cycle so far has seen other members of the “Squad” lose their reelection bids. In June, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was defeated by Westchester County Executive George Latimer. Earlier this week, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) lost to St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell.
