Trump asked for shoes after Secret Service hit him ‘so hard’ they went flying

Shortly after former President Donald Trump was shot during a failed assassination attempt Saturday he asked repeatedly for his shoes, an alternate angle provides an answer to why he had that concern.

During the chaotic scene after Trump ducked down and was escorted off stage, the microphone on the stage picked up Trump saying he wanted to grab his shoes. Photos and videos from the assassination attempt show that both of Trump’s shoes were blown off when he was tackled by Secret Service officers.

A video posted by WBEN of the immediate aftermath of the shooting shows Secret Service officers barricading Trump until the shooter was been killed, with one of them tossing his shoe off the stage and what appears to be an insert in the shoe flying out. As Trump leaves the stage, the other shoe can be seen on the stage.

Trump said the agents had tackled him “so hard” that his shoes went flying off.

“The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight,” Trump told the New York Post.

The former president praised the Secret Service’s immediate response to the attempt on his life and told the Washington Examiner’s Byron York that he wanted to continue speaking after the shooting.

“I wanted to keep speaking — I wanted to keep speaking, but I just got shot,” Trump said. “It’s a very surreal experience, and you never know what you’re going to do until a thing like that happens.”

The assassination attempt at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday resulted in the death of one rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, 50, along with injuries to the former president and other attendees.

Trump made his first public appearance since the incident Monday during the first night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. He had a bandage covering his right ear where a bullet grazed him, bloodying his ear.

The former president will accept the Republican Party’s presidential nomination for a third consecutive time Thursday, but will seek a second term to the White House with a new running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH). Trump also told the Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito in his first interview after the assassination attempt that he intended to rewrite his nomination acceptance speech to focus on unity.
