Bernie Valdez Award recipients are named | NONPROFIT REGISTER

News: A luncheon to be held Aug. 9 at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium is the occasion for the Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy & Research Organization (CLLARO) to honor the 2024 Bernie Valdez Award recipients.

They are:

• Christopher Luna, manager of social determinants of health for the Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition. He will receive the Distinguished Capitol Fellow Award.

• David Portillo, a program officer with The Denver Foundation, the Polly Baca Social Justice Award.

• Jim Garcia, founder and chief executive officer of Tepeyac Community Health Center, the Federico Pena Lifetime Achievement Award.

• Lily Griego, Region VIII Health Human Services director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Sheldon and Jan Steinhauser Community Service Award.

• Marlene De La Rosa, a Denver Public Schools board member, the Lena Archuleta Education Award.

• Metropolitan State University of Denver, the CLLARO Alianza Award.

Dr. Michael Cordes, CLLARO’s president and chief executive officer, hails the honorees as those whose “Tireless efforts and dedication to empowering the Latino community in Colorado embody the spirit of Bernie Valdez and the mission of CLLARO. As we celebrate 60 years of Latino excellence, we are inspired by their achievements and their positive impact.”

The late Bernie Valdez founded the Latin American Research and Service Agency. He also worked for the U.S. Department of Labor’s World War II Bracero Program, managed Denver’s welfare programs, and served on the board of the Denver Public Schools. He died in 1997.

The 11:30 a.m. luncheon also celebrates CLLARO’s 60th anniversary and the 29th year that the Bernie Valdez Awards have been presented.
