Wisconsin mayor says Biden and Trump campaigns didn’t pay invoices for events

The mayor of Green Bay, Wisconsin, said both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump’s campaigns have not paid nearly $64,000 worth of invoices to the city since 2016.

In terms of 2024 campaign events in the northeastern Wisconsin city, the Biden campaign owes a little under $7,000 while the Trump campaign owes around $33,000. Former presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are also on the hook for some unpaid money from 2016 campaign stops.

“We are honored to host visits from presidential candidates and appreciate the significance these events hold for our community,” Mayor Eric Genrich said. “At the same time, there are very real costs associated with the public safety resources these events require, and it is crucial that the financial responsibilities associated with these services are borne by the campaigns, not our taxpayers.”

A spokesperson for the mayor’s office said it went public with the unpaid invoices “as part of the City’s commitment to transparency,” a practice it will continue into the 2024 presidential election.

From Trump’s most recent visit to Green Bay, his campaign owes the city $33,389.55 for police, fire, public works, and traffic services.

After ABC 2 reported the unpaid invoices, a Biden campaign spokesperson said it was paying the outstanding balances.

“The Biden-Harris campaign is proud to campaign in Green Bay and highlight President Biden’s work to stand with workers, create good-paying jobs and lower health care costs,” the campaign spokesperson said in a statement. “Unlike Donald Trump, who lies and cheats at the expense of working people so he can get ahead, we paid our bills and will continue to engage voters across Green Bay in the lead-up to November.”

There was an outstanding invoice of $6,989.58 from first lady Jill Biden’s most recent visit to Wisconsin in June. Both Sanders and Clinton’s visits in 2016 cost a combined $14,504.96. A Trump campaign visit from 2016 with then-vice presidential candidate Mike Pence cost $9,380.10.

There are no unpaid invoices from 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic did not allow for in-person campaign events in Green Bay.

“Green Bay residents are frugal people who pay their bills, and they expect presidential candidates to do the same,” Genrich said. “It is a matter of fairness and fiscal responsibility — our residents should not bear the burden of these expenses.”

The Trump campaign did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment about when it plans to pay the invoices.
