Colorado Libertarians won’t submit party’s presidential ticket to November ballot; fight over fracking near Aurora Reservoir erupts; jail supervisor can be held liable for suicide | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Today is June 13, 2024, and here’s what you need to know:
Colorado Libertarians decide not to submit party's presidential ticket to state's November ballot
Colorado’s Libertarian Party doesn’t plan to submit paperwork putting the party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees on the state’s general election ballot after determining the national ticket doesn’t share the state party’s core values, a party spokesman said.
That could change if Libertarian presidential nominee Chase Oliver and his running mate, Mike ter Maat, change their positions on numerous issues, the spokesman told Colorado Politics.
As things stand, however, the state’s largest minor political party is leaving its options open — and could nominate someone else or list “none of the above” as the Libertarian candidate for president on Colorado ballots.
Trump campaign's former Colorado state director takes on Republican convention, delegate-support role
Justin Everett, the former Jefferson County legislator who oversaw Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in Colorado earlier this year, is helping organize next month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, party and campaign officials told Colorado Politics.
The shift in focus for the veteran political consultant comes as the Trump campaign consolidates operations with the Republican National Committee after the former president secured the GOP nomination this spring, the officials said.
Trump’s campaign hired Everett as its state director in January, just days after the Colorado Republican Party broke with tradition to endorse Trump ahead of the state’s Super Tuesday presidential primary. Weeks later, Trump defeated Nikki Haley in Colorado by a 30-point margin, winning all of the state’s delegates to the RNC.
Fight over fracking near Aurora Reservoir erupts
Shortly after moving into her new home near the Aurora Reservoir, Marsha Goldsmith Kamin took a walk with her husband around the neighborhood and saw a sign that said, “Save the Aurora Reservoir.”
“I looked at my husband and I looked out at the reservoir and I said, ‘What’s the matter with it? What are we saving?'” Kamin said.
Civitas, an oil and gas company, has submitted a proposal to operate 166 wells near the reservoir and several communities. After clearing the technical requirements to move forward, the company is now encountering stiff opposition from Kamin and nearby residents.
10th Circuit agrees Saguache County jail supervisor can be held liable for detainee's suicide
The federal appeals court based in Denver agreed on Wednesday that a jury should decide whether a Saguache County jail supervisor is liable for failing to prevent the death of a suicidal detainee.
Last year, a trial judge declined to grant immunity to Capt. Kenneth Wilson for the November 2019 suicide of Jackson Maes in his cell. Wilson witnessed Maes harming himself and even believed “something more” should be done for Maes. Instead, jail staff largely left Maes to die by suicide, unnoticed until the following morning.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit concluded a jury could find Wilson violated Maes’ constitutional rights by being deliberately indifferent to his serious medical needs — meaning Wilson knew about and disregarded a substantial risk of harm.
Denver airport 'aerotropolis' to businesses: time to develop all this land
As Denver International Airport grew into one of the world’s busiest transit hubs, local officials saw an opportunity with the miles of empty plains surrounding it.
They envisioned a sort of city centering around the airport, catering to a community of businesses that want close access to their supply chains.
The “Colorado Aerotropolis,” a commercial district around DIA, has been in the works for more than a decade. On Tuesday, it “officially launched” with a revamped website that advertises to businesses about how much developable land is available within the economic corridor.
