NATIONAL WESTERN STOCK SHOW

Denver

News: The Crow family, whose history of service to the livestock industry spans over 100 years, will receive the prestigious Friend of the National Western award at a Jan. 11 dinner hosted by the exclusive Red Meat Club.

Best known for their publication, the Western Livestock Journal, the Crow family is known for “doing what they felt was right for the industry,” regardless of how it might affect circulation for the publication.

The Journal was founded in 1922 by family patriarch Nelson R. Crow, who in 1968 passed the torch to his son Dick. In the early 1990s, Nelson’s grandson, Pete, took over the Journal’s reins.

Nelson Crow expanded the business to include a dairy magazine and a Western crops publication. At one time, Crow Publications occupied the entire fourth floor of the Livestock Exchange Building at the National Western Center in Denver.

Producers, commission companies and packers relied on the Crow family publications for price discovery in their markets and other major markets around the country.

Dick Crow also is known for being one of the Red Meat Club’s founders in the mid-1970s, with longtime Safeway meat buyer Cecil Hellbusch.

Pete Crow joined the company in 1982, starting as a fieldman in the Southwest. He then moved to Denver to take on other publishing duties. He said he attributes the Journal’s success to “hiring the right people, staying on top of the markets and having excellent original editorial content.”

Tickets for the Red Meat Club Dinner are $60 each and include a 5:30 p.m. happy hour, followed by a prime rib dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a talk by Mandy Carr Johnson, senior scientific director for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

They can be purchased by calling 303-295-6124.
