House Republicans file Biden impeachment inquiry resolution, setting up vote for next week

House Republicans filed their impeachment inquiry resolution Thursday morning, which is expected to get a vote next week to authorize their investigation into President Joe Biden.

The resolution was filed by Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND), and will be marked up on Tuesday, Dec. 12, teeing up a likely vote on Wednesday.

The inquiry was first opened by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who announced it without a vote.

The White House has continually cited how Republicans, including those leading the impeachment inquiry, criticized Democrats for opening an inquiry into former President Donald Trump in 2019 without a vote.

So House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) wants the full House to vote on it to authorize the inquiry. Its passage is still up in the air, though it appears like it will pass because more centrist Republicans, who previously opposed it, have said they will vote to open the inquiry.

The impeachment inquiry is looking into whether Biden improperly used his position of power to enrich himself and his family, whether he used his influence to pressure the Department of Justice to help his son Hunter Biden, and how involved he was in his family’s foreign business dealings.

It also focuses on an allegation raised in an FBI tip sheet that says Joe Biden, along with Hunter Biden, took bribes from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company for which Hunter Biden was a board member, to pressure the Ukrainian government to fire a prosecutor.
