Denver police issued 373 tickets in one day during highway speed enforcement operation
The Denver Police Department issued 373 citations Wednesday as part of a multi-jurisdiction highway speed enforcement operation in the Denver metro area.
Of the 373 citations, 331 were issued for going at least 20 mph over the speed limit. DPD also made 50 stops that resulted in warnings during the operation.
Police said the operation was intended to increase traffic safety on Colorado’s highways. In 2020, there were 611 crash-related fatalities in Colorado and nationally, 31% of traffic fatalities are related to speeding.
“Already this year, there have been two fatal crashes and five serious injury crashes on Denver’s highways,” said DPD Chief Paul Pazen.

“The majority of vehicle crashes are preventable. We all have a role in traffic safety, and everyone must do their part to ensure we all arrive safely to our destination. Slow down and don’t drive distracted or impaired.”
Among all agencies, 765 citations were issued Wednesday, including four for speeding at least 100 mph and 351 for speeding at least 20 mph over the limit.
The operation also resulted in the recovery of three stolen vehicles, five DUI arrests and nine commercial motor vehicle inspections, police said.
In addition to DPD, agency participants included the Colorado State Patrol, Arvada Police Department, Aurora Police Department, Greenwood Village Police Department, Lakeside Police Department and Lakewood Police Department.
DPD said it has conducted targeted highway speed enforcement since the beginning of the year and intends to continue focusing on the issue.
