Facebook to allow political and social ads to run again after 2020 election ban

Facebook will once again allow political and social ads to run on its platform in the United States, according to an announcement made Wednesday.

Facebook first banned political ads before the 2020 election in the hopes of stopping the spread of misinformation, confusion, and civil unrest and kept the policy going after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Some political organizations and candidates were upset by the ad bans on Facebook, warning of restrictions to political speech and transparency.

The platform said that political and social ads will be required to go through a vetting process before being approved to run on the website.

“Unlike other platforms, we require authorization and transparency not just for political and electoral ads, but also for social issue ads, and our systems do not distinguish between these categories,” Facebook said in its announcement Wednesday.

Facebook said over the coming months it plans to reconsider how its ads work on the platform to see where changes need to be made to avoid confusion or abuse.

The social media giant also announced in February that it would look into ways to reduce political content on the platform to better meet the needs of users, it said. According to Facebook, an average 6% of a user’s feed represents political content.
