Just days before ballots go out for Colorado’s presidential primary, state Sen. Julie Gonzales, a Denver Democrat, is endorsing Elizabeth Warren, calling the Massachusetts senator’s immigration reform plan the strongest she’s ever seen.

“Because she actually listens to the people directly impacted by the problems we face as Americans, Elizabeth Warren crafts powerful solutions that meet the scale of the challenges we face to move our country forward,” said Gonzales, in a statement provided by the Warren campaign.

“She will fight for working families by making sure our economy works for working people. I’m proud to endorse her for President, and I am ready to fight like hell alongside her to build a grassroots movement that ensures we all live with dignity and respect.”

Gonzales, whose Senate District 34 covers downtown and northwest Denver, becomes the sixth Colorado legislator to throw support behind Warren ahead of the state’s “Super Tuesday” primary on March 3.

The endorsement lands a day before Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro is scheduled to campaign in Colorado on Warren’s behalf.

Warren said in a statement that she was grateful for Gonzales’s support, saying the immigrant rights organizer “has dedicated her life to organizing for justice across Colorado.”

“Julie has been on the frontlines of the fight for affordable housing, immigrant rights, and economic justice,” Warren said. “Together, I’m confident we’ll make big, structural change to put power where it belongs – in the hands of the people.”

Other state officials endorsing Warren include state Sens. Kerry Donovan, Faith Winter and Mike Foote; state Reps. Dominique Jackson and Chris Kennedy; and City Council members Michal Rosenoer of Edgewater and William Lindstedt of Broomfield.

Warren is one of 15 Democrats on Colorado’s primary ballot. She has been polling among the top four candidates nationally and finished in third place in the Iowa caucuses this week.
