Fifteen percent of the Denver Police Department’s 1,606 officers are women, and the department is hoping to boost that percentage.

From Feb. 8-9, the department will hold a Women’s Community Academy, in which 25-35 attendees will learn about policing as a career and ask questions in what is advertised as a “welcoming and open environment.”

“I encourage any woman who is even slightly considering a career in law enforcement to attend our two-day, behind-the-scenes community academy,”  Deputy Chief Barb Archer said.

The first day will cover the city’s seven police districts, and attendees will hear from women in leadership positions. There will be an introduction to investigations and education about the various tools that law enforcement uses, from dogs to tanks.

On the second day, there will be a tutorial in arrests and less-than-lethal options for use of force. Attendees will then participate in a video simulator and hear about recruitment.

The academy will take place at the Denver Police Academy at 2155 North Akron Road, and participants must be at least 21 years old and pass a background check. The academy’s application is here.
