DeVos to speak at CCU dinner during “March for Life” event
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will speak at Colorado Christian University’s President’s Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
Calling DeVos a “courageous and inspirational leader promoting school choice, empowering parents [and] protecting religious freedom,” CCU’s dinner coincides with the annual “March for Life,” which protests the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
CCU students will co-lead this year’s march. The rally will take place on the National Mall on Jan. 24.
Tickets for the president’s dinner at the Museum of the Bible range in price from $100 to $175. Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt will interview DeVos at the event.
“As an alumna of a Christian university, she understands the vital role that Christian higher education plays in the life of the nation,” CCU President Donald Sweeting said.
Last week, DeVos’s department issued a policy requiring schools to certify that they do not prohibit prayer in order to receive federal funding. Any complaints against schools for allegedly prohibiting “constitutionally protected prayer” will go to DeVos.
“Students may, for instance, read the Bible during homeroom. They may give thanks to God before lunch or a snack. They can pray a decade or two of the rosary at recess. They can be excused from class to fulfill prayer obligations, such as during Ramadan,” DeVos wrote in USA Today. “Teachers can pray in the lounge during a break. And students most certainly may express their faith in homework or other assignments free from discrimination based on religion.”
