Bennet reaches fundraising goal, extends ‘opposite of Trump’ ad campaign in New Hampshire

Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bennet is expanding his ad campaign in New Hampshire after the Colorado senator notched his best fundraising day since last fall, his campaign said Friday.

The dark horse candidate, who has been lagging in polls and hasn’t appeared on the Democrats’ primary debate stage since last summer, is banking on a breakthrough performance in New Hampshire’s Feb. 11 presidential primary.

“Surpassing our fundraising goal last night is another confirmation of our campaign’s momentum — from key endorsements to growing support in New Hampshire,” campaign spokeswoman Shannon Beckham said in a statement. “We’re building the ground game we need to carry Michael to a top three finish on primary night.”

Boosted by what the Bennet campaign said were the most contributions it had received in a single day since September on Thursday, the campaign reached a $700,000 fundraising goal set a month ago to pay for more staff and advertising in New Hampshire.

Added Beckham: “Voters watched the debate this week and felt less sure than ever that the frontrunners could beat Trump or unite the country to make progress for middle-class families. The surge we saw in donations on the final day of the push is further proof that Americans are looking for a president like Michael Bennet, who has the experience and agenda to take on Trump and start governing the country again.”

Bennet is spending the holiday weekend meeting with New Hampshire voters before the Senate begins the impeachment trial on Tuesday. According to a schedule released Friday, he’s set to complete his 37th town hall in the state on Monday, since declaring in early December that he would hold 50 town halls there before the primary.

“Given the fact that I’m the only candidate in the race who’s won two national election in a swing state and has an agenda I’ve proposed that I think will not just galvanize the Democratic base but will allow us to win back some of the 9 million people who voted twice for Barack Obama and once for Donald Trump, that people are wiling to give that a look,” Bennet said Friday on MSNBC.

Since last month, Bennet has been airing a TV ad in the state describing himself as “the opposite of Donald Trump” and released a series of digital videos introducing the former school superintendent to New Hampshire voters.

While he hasn’t registered above low single digits in national or early state polls, Bennet points to surveys suggesting that the bulk of likely primary voters have yet to commit to a candidate.

Bennet said on Jan. 1 that he thinks he can be among the top three finishers in New Hampshire’s primary.

On Friday, the FiveThirtyEight polling average showed Bennet in 10th place in New Hampshire with 0.4% support. The front-runners in the state appear to be Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg, the only Democrats with support in the teens.

Bennet won a formal endorsement this week from strategist James Carville, who helmed Bill Clinton’s come-from-behind win in New Hampshire’s 1992 primary. Bennet also counted new endorsements from two former school board members and a New Hampshire state legislator who backed Cory Booker before the New Jersey senator withdrew from the race.
