Beginning on Jan. 1, Colorado Parks and Wildlife will require users of the 41 state parks to reserve a campsite, cabin, yurt, picnic area or other facility online or by phone.

The system “now provides the flexibility to book anywhere from six months in advance up until the moment they arrive at the park and find an available site,” the department said.

Previously, reservations were unavailable three days before a visit. CPW piloted the new system at five parks in 2018, and 17 additional parks this year. Campers may receive citations or evictions for occupying a campsite without a reservation.

The department also announced over 30 hikes that are scheduled for New Year’s Day. The events are free but require a valid park pass.

First Day Hikes is a national initiative begun more than 25 years ago. Last year, 72,700 people nationwide were involved in the Jan. 1 activities, hiking over 150,280 miles.

Referring to the warm beverages and snacks that many parks will offer, CPW Director Dan Prenzlow said, “What better way to celebrate than with a nice park stroll and a hot cup of cocoa? We’ll see you out there!”
