What they are saying: Coloradans react to impeachment hearing

On Wednesday, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, led by U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, held the first formal, public hearing of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

Former ambassador William Taylor and State Department employee George Kent testified that the Trump administration worked outside normal foreign policy procedures to withhold military aid to Ukraine in contravention of longstanding U.S. policy.

What prompted the inquiry was a whistle-blower complaint about Trump’s phone call with the Ukrainian president in July, in which he said, “I would like you to do us a favor” and investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.

Here is what Colorado’s policymakers and advocacy groups are saying:

“Even on Capitol Hill here today, the halls were quiet. People were watching the proceedings to see what went on. I thought both of the witnesses were very factual, very sober, very, very persuasive.” – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette

“The facts are clear. The law is clear. The president tried to extort a foreign government for his personal political gain. @RepAdamSchiff has ensured that the American public get the facts, regardless of Republican distractions or distortions.” – U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse

“As Dems begin this impeachment farce they trot out two witnesses with no first hand knowledge of events. Opinions aren’t facts. Surely their closed door auditions for witnesses could have yielded a better start?” – U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, also the chair of the Colorado GOP

“What this boils down to is unelected, career bureaucrats (with no first-hand knowledge of the call) publicly airing minor policy disagreements with their boss @realDonaldTrump. This is an unprecedented attempt to make differences in policy prioritization an impeachable offense.” – U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn

“Today, America will bear witness to the stories of patriotic public servants who spoke out in service and duty to our great nation. We cannot accept efforts to attack their patriotism. We must uncover the facts wherever they may lead. #DefendOurDemocracy” – U.S. Rep. Jason Crow

“Ambassador Taylor’s testimony leaves no doubt that President Trump used his official office to extort Ukraine for personal, political benefit. #DefendOurDemocracy” – U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter
