Colorado’s DeGette aligns with Trump on e-cigarette flavor ban

President Donald Trump announced a move Wednesday to curb teenage vaping, and U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado expressed her support.

Trump proposed a ban on thousands of flavored nicotine products used in e-cigarettes, saying he wants to raise awareness of teenage vaping.

“People are going to watch what we’re saying, and parents are going to be a lot tougher with respect to their children,” he said.

DeGette tweeted out her support for the decision.

I don’t often agree with the Trump admin, but on this I do,” she wrote on Twitter. “These flavored nicotine products are causing real harm to the health of our children.”

DeGette has long been a proponent of increasing regulation on the use of e-cigarettes. She introduced two bills this year that would ban the sale of kid-friendly flavored products and raise the national smoking age for all nicotine products to 21.

The Democrat also is leading an investigation into vaping-related illnesses and will hear testimony on the issue Sept. 25.

Nearly 100 cases of a new lung illness across 14 states have been linked to vaping and e-cigarette use, reports the Washington Post.

Colorado’s first case was confirmed last month.

“This recent surge in vaping-related illnesses shows exactly why more federal regulation of these vaping products is so important,” DeGette said in a news release. “No one who uses these products knows what they are inhaling into their bodies, or how it might affect their health. We can, and must, do more to protect the health of the American people.”
