Coloradans are being asked to leave their guns at home when grocery shopping.

Kroger, the parent company of the 148 King Soopers and City Market stores in Colorado, wants to give its employees and consumers a “safe place to work and shop” by requesting that guns not be taken into its stores, the chain said in a news release Wednesday.

Kroger’s release emphasized that it stopped selling firearms and ammunition a year ago.

“We recognize the growing chorus of Americans who are no longer comfortable with the status quo and who are advocating for concrete and common sense gun reforms,” said Jessica Adelman, group vice president of corporate affairs for Kroger. “We are also joining those encouraging our elected leaders to pass laws that will strengthen background checks and remove weapons from those who have been found to pose a risk for violence.”

Walmart made a similar statement earlier Wednesday, in addition to announcing it will discontinue sales of handgun ammunition.
