Historic designation for Tom’s Diner in Denver moves forward (VIDEO)

A proposal to attach an historic designation to Tom’s Diner on East Colfax Avenue in Denver has advanced despite the longtime owner’s objections.

The Land Use, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee of the council voted to send the designation proposal to the entire council, according to a tweet from the Denver Community Planning and Development.

Tom Messina moved to Denver and bought a diner on Colfax Avenue in 1991. Tom’s Diner cost $800,000 then, and the property at 601 E. Colfax Ave. is worth a lot more today.

In February, Messina listed the property for sale to make way for an eight-story, 113-unit apartment building.

Messina worries if the city votes to designate his building as historic, he won’t be able to sell it for the price he wants.

The final step in the process is a council public hearing August 26.
