Presidential candidate Kamala Harris to appear in Denver
U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California, among the Democratic frontrunners in the race for president, will appear Friday night in Denver, her campaign says.
Harris will hold a rally at Manual High School, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. (earlier than previously announced), the campaign posted on its website.
It will be Harris’ first public appearance in Denver since declaring her presidential candidacy.
Harris, a former California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney, is among a small group of leading Democrats in the 2020 race out of some two dozen declared candidates, along with former Vice President Joe Biden and her Senate colleagues Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
An average of five recent polls of Democratic voters compiled by Real Clear Politics — all conducted before this week’s candidate debates in Detroit — shows Harris with 10.6% support, behind Biden (31.8%), Sanders (16.4%) and Warren (15.2%). No other candidate exceeds 6% support.
Harris arguably got the biggest bump in support among the 2020 contenders following the debut Democratic candidate debates June 26-27 in Miami, where she confronted Biden over civil rights issues. Before the debate, she was polling in the single digits in most national surveys.
Harris, a 54-year-old native of Oakland, California, joined the Senate in January 2017 after six years as California AG that followed seven years as San Francisco’s top prosecutor. She earlier was a deputy DA in Alameda County, California, which includes Oakland.
