One former state attorney general candidate plans to run for job currently held by another in the 18th Judicial District.

Republican George Brauchler, who lost the last November’s general election for attorney general, is term-limited as district attorney for Arapahoe, Lincoln, Douglas and Elbert counties.

Wednesday, Democrat Amy Padden, who ran in vain in the Democratic primary for AG last year, plans to run for top prosecutor in the district.

An Aurora resident, Padden is a deputy district attorney in the 5th Judicial District, which includes Clear Creek, Eagle, El Jebel, Lake and Summit counties. 

She formerly worked in the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, and she is the the former executive assistant U.S. attorney for Colorado, which included much of the day-to-day management for the office of about 200 employees, she said in her campaign announcement.

Padden also formerly was a partner at the Denver-based law firm of Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell.

“As your district attorney, my first and last job is to keep you and your family safe.” Padden said in a statement. “The best way to do that is to make sure that we prioritize violent crime, that everyone is treated equally under the law, and that justice is applied fairly.

“I will work tirelessly to increase public safety, stand with victims and ensure vulnerable members of our society are protected.”

Matt Maillaro, an assistant district attorney for the 18th Judicial District, announced his candidacy in the Democratic primary in April.

Padden released a list of endorsements on the same day she filed her paperwork with the Secretary of State’s Office:

• Ken Salazar, the former secretary of the Department of Interior, former U.S. senator and former Colorado attorney general.
• Gail Schoettler, the former lieutenant governor and former state treasurer
• Former state Rep. Joe Salazar, another former Colorado attorney general candidate
• Aurora School Board member Kevin Cox
• Former state Reps. Karen Middleton and Su Ryden
• Current Rep. Meg Froelich
• District attorneys Henry Solano (3rd Judicial District) and Bruce Brown (5th Judicial District)
