Polis honors US women’s soccer team members at Rapids-Arsenal match (VIDEO)

COMMERCE CITY — Fresh from their World Cup victory, members of the U.S. women’s national soccer team were recognized Monday at a friendly match between the Colorado Avalanche and England’s storied Arsenal.

Women’s team players Lindsey Horan and Mallory Pugh were in attendance; both are  Colorado natives.

They were honored at halftime in front of the crowd as Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared July 15 U.S. Women’s National Team Day in the state.

Arsenal, of the English Premier League, prevailed over the Rapids 3-0 in front of a near sellout crowd – many of them cheering the visitors.

Both teams are owned by Colorado and Missouri sports magnate Stan Kroenke, who also owns the match’s venue, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

“You could feel it in the air walking in,” Colorado Rapids interim coach Conor Casey said. “The energy of a full house. So many important people who are a part of pushing this sport and this club forward. Just a great night to take part of this and come together as a group.”
