The list of big-name Republicans is getting longer for next month’s Western Conservative Summit in Denver, as organizers announced Tuesday that U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas has joined the lineup.

Crenshaw attained national political celebrity status in November, when the former Navy SEAL was mocked on the NBC show “Saturday Night Live” for wearing an eye patch.

The next week comedian Pete Davidson apologized, and Crenshaw appeared on the show. Crenshaw wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post about why he didn’t seek an apology.

Crenshaw lost his eye after a roadside bomb exploded while he was deployed in Afghanistan in 2012. He also served in Iraq. During his military career he earned two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor.

He was elected to represent the Houston district in Congress in 2018.

“Rep. Dan Crenshaw embodies the Western American spirit,” said Jeff Hunt, chairman of the Western Conservative Summit and director of the Centennial Institute, the conservative think tank that puts on the annual Denver gathering.

“He is courageous, hard-working, principled, and committed to public service. The Western Conservative Summit is proud to host such an American patriot as Dan Crenshaw.”

Crenshaw serves on the House Budget Committee and the Committee on Homeland Security.

A strong defender or Christian rights, Crenshaw also has been a defender of President Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico during his first floor speech in January.

He chided Democrats. “If you think winning means a porous border with 400,000 people apprehended illegally every year, then your definition of winning is different than mine,” Crenshaw said to Democrats in his address.
