State lawmaker Pettersen said to be targeted in recall try

Days after a bid to recall Democratic state Rep. Tom Sullivan ended, another statehouse Democrat is being targeted.

Republican Nancy Pallozzi says she will mount a recall attempt against state Sen. Brittany Petterson of Lakewood in Senate District 22.

Petterson defeated Pallozzi in a 2016 race for a state House seat by 19 percentage points.

On a closed Facebook page Pallozzi set up for the recall effort, she announced Thursday that “[e]verything is moving along and we are hoping to have the petitions in hand by July 16th, if not sooner. We are finalizing the wording to submit to the secretary of state’s office in July.”

According to the page, the Pettersen recall effort is intended to coordinate with a recall attempt against Democratic Gov. Jared Polis.

Those recall petitions cannot, by law, begin to circulate until Polis has been in office six months. That’s around July 8.

In a previous post, Pallozzi said the recall effort will not be easy. “This will be a tough recall… She won’t resign, she is too valuable to the dems, and we can make this happen,” she wrote.

Pettersen, one of the General Assembly’s most successful fundraisers, defeated Republican Tony Sanchez in the 2018 Senate race by 16 percentage points in a race that drew 73,501 votes.

That sets the minimum number for recall petitions at 18,376 valid signatures. Of course, petition gatherers usually try to collect much more than that to overcome invalid signatures.

Pettersen has not yet returned Colorado Politics’ request for comment.

She raised conservatives’ ire during the 2019 session through her backing of a proposal to authorize a supervised injection site for drug users on Denver. That proposal never made it into an introduced bill.

Democratic state Sen. Brittany Pettersen is interviewed on “Next with Kyle Clark.”
