Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Tuesday proposed creating a city Department of Transportation and Infrastructure – a move that would require a voter-approved charter change on the November ballot.

Hancock’s proposal comes during a re-election campaign in which some of his challengers also have called for a transportation department or more planning around transit issues.

It also comes at time when residents have complained about growing traffic congestion within the city.

“Creating a Department of Transportation and Infrastructure in Denver is one of many steps we are taking to reinvent our transportation system to improve connectivity, economic opportunity and quality of life for everyone,” Hancock said at a news conference at Denver City Hall.

The new department would include building out transportation systems that include bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, Hancock said.

It would also include a division of Public Works that would oversee trash and recycling collection and maintenance of the city’s storm and sewer systems.

Placing the charter change on the November ballot also will require approval from the Denver City Council.
