If Colorado politics is a circus, then why not throw a carnival for the Terminator?

Supporters of amendments Y and Z, aimed at ending political gerrymandering in congressional and legislative seats, are bringing for movie star and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to Denver, “on a break from filming the latest ‘Terminator’ movie,” Saturday at the University of Denver Campus Green.

Gov. John Hickenlooper also is scheduled to be on hand for the free food and drinks, carnival games and tailgating for the rally, which begins at 2 p.m.

Colorado Politics was the first to tell you last week that Schwarzenegger was coming to Colorado to stump for the amendments that would, respectively, create independent commissions to draw boundaries for the U.S. House and the General Assembly.

After the U.S. Census each 10 years, politicians and political parties have had an outsized role in shaping the districts, which often nearly guarantee one party a winning advantage.

Fair Maps Colorado, the group supporting amendments Y and Z, noted that free parking near the campus is limited, but there are pay lots, and attendees are encouraged to car pool or consider taking light rail or other alternative modes of getting there.

“Gov. Schwarzenegger has been a long-time advocate for redistricting that is more open, transparent and fair. He is supporting four states this election that have redistricting measures up for vote, including Colorado,” Fair Maps said in a media advisory Tuesday.
