The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: A hero emerges in ugly Rifle incident

Aside from the native tongues of the indigenous people who inhabited Colorado, Spanish has been spoken in the state longer than any other language.

Our southern neighbors in New Mexico – who share a heritage of Hispanic, Native American and Anglo influences – have forged an identity as a tri-cultural melange so solid that it’s part of the state’s brand.

It would be ludicrous for someone in Albuquerque or Santa Fe to demand that people not speak Spanish. And that’s true of many places in the Southwest.
