Former U.S. House Speaker John Boehner to headline Denver fundraising dinner for Tipton

Former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner will headline a fundraising dinner to help U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez, defend his seat in the 3rd Congressional District.

The $250-per-person dinner will be held Thursday at The Halcyon Hotel, 245 Columbine Street in Denver, beginning at 5 p.m. The event is not open to the media, a campaign spokesman said.

Financially speaking, Tipton’s campaign against Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush is one of the closest in the state. So far, Tipton has raised about $952,288 and Bush has raised $716,332, according to recent campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission.

But money raised might not be the best indication for the race. Donald Trump won the largely rural district in 2016 by 12 percentage points, Colorado Politics previously reported. Tipton also won re-election there that same year by 14 percentage points.

The district encompasses almost all of the Western Slope, the San Luis Valley and Pueblo County.

Editor’s note: This article was updated on Aug. 24 to correct the area the district encompasses.
